Overview

Daniel Pocock is one of the Independent candidates contesting the Clacton parliamentary by-election on 13 August 2026.

Who is Daniel Pocock?

Pocock is a software engineer whose professional and campaigning background is heavily focused on computing, open-source software, cybersecurity, digital freedom and the way technology companies influence public life.

He was born in Melbourne, Australia and graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Computer Science in 2002. SBS reports that he later worked in Europe for organisations including Barclays Capital, Thomson Reuters and UBS.

His Clacton campaign uses the name “Pocock-on-Sea” and presents him as an Australian challenger to the political establishment. His published campaign has expanded well beyond technology and now contains a number of proposals directly concerning Clacton and the wider constituency.

Pocock participated in the independently organised candidate hustings at Clacton Town Hall on 6 August.

“Can the Establishment stomach an Australian in Westminster?”

Clacton & Local Priorities

Pocock has published a growing series of proposals relating specifically to the Clacton constituency.

📱

Mobile Phone Blackspots

He says parts of the constituency have unacceptable mobile connectivity and has pledged to pursue improvements to local mobile coverage, drawing on his communications technology background.

🚋

Clacton Tram Network

Pocock has proposed investigating a modern tram network beginning at Walton-on-the-Naze, running through Clacton and continuing to Jaywick, with accessible low-floor trams and possible private sector development around stops.

🛣️

Roads & Potholes

Road condition and potholes have become another campaign theme. He has invited Australian road safety campaigner Steve Panozzo, known as the “Pothole Whisperer”, to compare conditions in Essex with Australia.

🇫🇷

Clacton & Valence

He wants to revive Tendring’s relationship with its French twin city Valence and has suggested tourism, sporting exchanges and even a regular coach connection between the areas.

🏪

Small Businesses

Pocock has highlighted the damage that fake online reviews can cause to hospitality and tourism businesses and has linked this to his broader concerns about online platforms.

🗳️

Media & Election Coverage

He has criticised what he sees as disproportionate attention being given to Nigel Farage and Count Binface while other candidates and local issues receive less coverage.

Campaign continues to develop: Pocock is publishing new Clacton campaign material regularly, so this section reflects proposals publicly available up to 9 August 2026.

Technology, Online Safety & Digital Rights

Technology is the most distinctive and longest-running part of Pocock’s political platform.

🔐

Cybersecurity

Pocock argues that cybersecurity expertise is under-represented in Parliament and presents his technical experience as one of the main reasons voters should consider him.

👧

Children Online

He has repeatedly raised concerns about the impact of online platforms and social media on children, young people and mental wellbeing.

📲

Independent App Stores

Pocock supports greater freedom for alternative app stores and argues that countries should not depend excessively on a small number of US technology companies to control what can be installed on personal devices.

💻

Open Source Software

He has a long background in open-source and free software communities and argues for greater public and political understanding of digital infrastructure.

🤖

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence appears frequently in his writing, particularly questions of transparency, institutional power, online information and control over technology.

🌐

Social Media

Pocock is strongly critical of algorithm-led social media, which he frequently calls “social control media”. He argues that political campaigning should return to direct conversations, websites and decentralised communication.

Worth noting: His website is unusually extensive. Alongside concrete local proposals, it contains lengthy material about international technology disputes, open-source organisations, litigation, religion, foreign policy and allegations concerning organisations and individuals. Those claims are Pocock’s own and Clacton.org does not independently endorse them.

Background

Professional Background

  • Born in Melbourne, Australia.
  • Raised partly in Coburg and rural Wandong in Victoria.
  • Graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2002 with a Bachelor of Computer Science.
  • Worked in Europe after graduating.
  • Previous employers reported by SBS include Barclays Capital, Thomson Reuters and UBS.
  • Long-standing involvement in free and open-source software.
  • Has spoken at United Nations forums in Geneva on technology and human rights issues.

Political & Campaign Background

Pocock says he was involved with Australia’s National Union of Students while at university and used his technical skills on early political and social-campaign websites.

He has stated that he was previously a member of the Australian Labor Party and resigned from it in 2013.

In 2024 he stood as an Independent candidate for the European Parliament in Ireland’s Midlands-North-West constituency.

For Clacton, he is again standing as an Independent rather than representing an established political party.

Political Position

A simple left-to-right label does not describe his published platform particularly well.

Mixed Issue-led Independent

Pocock’s current campaign mixes technology and digital-liberty arguments with support for tolerance and inclusion, criticism of concentrated corporate power, local infrastructure proposals, international links and anti-establishment campaigning.

Because these positions do not map consistently onto a standard UK left-right scale, Clacton.org has not assigned him a precise ideological position.

Election History

The previous version of this page incorrectly showed no earlier recorded election. Pocock contested the 2024 European Parliament election in Ireland.
